The Japanese Black Pine, or Pinus Thunbergii, belongs to the Pinaceae family. These trees, known as Kuromatsu (黒松) in Japanese, grow naturally around the coastal areas of Japan. The Japanese Black Pine is a strong tree that has a lifespan of easily hundreds of years. It is one of the classic bonsai and niwaki subjects, requiring great patience over many years to train properly.
Our black pines have been sculpted, trained and maintained for 40+ years in the traditional Niwaki method of “cloud pruning”. Our family fell in love with the style and art form and decided to embark on a journey to continue the tradition. Since every tree looks different from every angle - pictures cannot do them justice. We encourage prospective buyers to schedule on-site visits to see our rare collection in person. We hope you will find the perfect focal piece to add to your landscape.
